How to Write a Letter of Invitation to Canada

A Letter of Invitation is a formal letter written by someone in Canada inviting a foreign national to visit. While writing one does not guarantee a visa, it is often required as part of a temporary resident visa (visitor visa) application. Your letter should include the following:

1. Information About the Person You Are Inviting
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Address and phone number
- Relationship to you
- Purpose of their visit (e.g. attending a wedding, family event, vacation)
- How long they plan to stay in Canada
- Where they will stay during their visit
- Who will be responsible for travel expenses, accommodations, etc.

2. Information About You (the Inviter)
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Canadian address and phone number
- Status in Canada (Citizen or Permanent Resident)
- Occupation
- A statement of your willingness to host or support the visitor
- A copy of your proof of status in Canada (e.g. PR card, citizenship certificate, passport)

Notarization Required:

Once the letter is complete, you may need to have it notarized. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) often recommends or requires that Letters of Invitation be signed in the presence of a Notary Public.
